Finebaum says Alabama âtotally disrespectedâ by CFP committee: âIt was an insultâ
The College Football Playoff committee latest poll was an “insult” to the Alabama football program, Paul Finebaum said.
The SEC Network analyst, who joined me on “The Opening Kickoff on WNSP-FM 105.5 on Thursday, was incredulous, saying the CFP committee just didn’t acknowledge or understand the magnitude of Alabama’s 42-28 win over LSU on Saturday.
“I think Alabama was completely and totally disrespected by the pollsters this week,” Finebaum declared. “It was a shock to me. I viewed that as the biggest game of the season for Alabama. I thought they played a perfect game, essentially, according to what Nick Saban said.”
Finebaum said Alabama is better than 8-1 Oregon. The Tide is 8-1 on the season, 6-0 in SEC play. The Tigers, meanwhile, slipped from No. 14 in the initial rankings to No. 19 after losing to Alabama.
“This is not the No. 8 team in the country,” he said. “To me, Alabama right now is playing at a top-5 level.” Still, Finebaum admits, he wouldn’t put Nick Saban’s club above the undefeated teams ahead of the Tide in the CFP poll. Yet, the sound win – even with the injury to LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels – over the top offense in the country demanded more consideration.
The comments come four days after the SEC Network analyst proclaimed this season to be Saban’s finest as the Alabama coach.
“I think it was an insult to the Alabama program for the committee to leave them at No. 8,” he said. “And with no rationale. …
“The Texas game is haunting them, and I understand that,” Finebaum said of Alabama. “You have to look at what we are seeing today, not what we saw on Sept. 9.”
Alabama is right behind No. 7 Texas, which beat the Crimson Tide is Week 2 in Tuscaloosa. The Longhorns are coming off a 33-30 overtime win against Kansas State.
